I just love the Westminster system. I really believe… It’s a wonderful system… Of course it is ponderous. Of course it has its failings. It depends on how you view these failings and the ponderous methods of getting there… But my God what would you change it for? Nothing at all… Yet we try and ruin it.

It seems incredible that the war is over. There has been no reaction here, just life as normal because we are well past the stage of being excited over anything… I feel I have done my part, Mother – my conscience is very clear and I feel also that I am now free of my obligations to my country. Although it’s a terrific waste of years out of my life, I am glad I have done it – I would do the same again… I have learnt such a lot Mother; and I know that whatever trials lay ahead, in the end I will succeed in whatever I take on.

The west was a dead end for me. I could not bear to think that my life would be controlled by drought. No hope of future pasture improvement. We could fine-tune our merino flocks but would lose them in the drought, as sure as night followed day…
